Seed Tech School offers a program called IT Ryugaku (Study Abroad) in Cebu, Philippines where students learn both programming and English.
「IT留学」とは、グローバルな活躍を目指し、プログラミングと英語を学ぶという合宿型の留学プログラムです。
The program is a camp-style experience where students study programming and English to kickstart a global career.
今回は、2018年5月に3ヶ月間渡航し、現在は決済事業会社にて人事領域に携わっている戸上さんに、IT留学に参加したきっかけや、IT留学で得たもの・その後の変化について、お話を伺いました。
We spoke with Togashi-san, who spent three months in Cebu in 2018 and now works in HR at a payment services company, about why he joined IT Ryugaku, what he learned from the experience, and how it shaped him afterward.
「今しかできない濃密な体験」を求め、IT留学へ（Chasing a Deeper Experience Beyond the Everyday）
ー留学を決意した背景や、留学先として「Seed Tech School」を選んだ理由を教えてください。
ーWhat made you decide to study abroad, and why did you choose Seed Tech School?
僕が留学を考えたのは、就職活動を終えて、就職まで1年弱ほどを控えたタイミングでした。「今しかできない密度の濃い経験をしたい」という想いから、海外へ長期滞在した経験がこれまでなかったこと、自分自身の価値観や思考をアップデートする良い機会だと思ったことから、留学という選択をとりました。
I started thinking seriously about studying abroad after I finished job hunting, with about a year left before starting work. I wanted to make the most of that time—to have a deep, meaningful experience that I couldn’t have later on. Since I’d never spent an extended period overseas, I felt it was the perfect chance to challenge myself and rethink my values and mindset.
オーストラリアへの留学と迷っていたのですが、「Seed Tech School」に決めた理由は大きく3つあります。「英語 × IT」の2軸を学ぶことで就職先でも活かせそうだと思ったこと、また、今後の自分の人生の可能性を広げられると感じたこと、そして一番大きかったのが、シードテックが掲げる「Life Shift Platform」に共感したことです。
I was also considering studying in Australia, but there were three main reasons I ultimately chose Seed Tech School. First, I felt that learning both English and IT would be directly useful in my future career. Second, I saw it as a way to expand my possibilities in life. And most importantly, I was drawn to Seed Tech’s vision of being a “Life Shift Platform”—that message really resonated with me.
先ほどもお話ししたように、留学の目的の一つとして「今しかできない経験ができる」ことを挙げていました。もう少し分解すると、人生を変えるような多様な出会い・体験ができれば、と思っていたんです。これを実現できるかは、留学を運営している会社の考え方や思想が大きく影響していると考えていたので、シードテックのサイトを覗いてみました。
As I mentioned earlier, one of my goals in studying abroad was to have an experience I could only have at that moment. More specifically, I was hoping for a range of encounters and experiences that could truly change my life. I believed that whether or not this could happen depended a lot on the mindset and philosophy of the company running the program—so I checked out Seed Tech’s website.
サイトを見てみると、「シードテックに関わる全ての方々がLife Shiftして、より素晴らしい人生を実現できる、そういう存在であり続けたい」という風に書いてあり、次世代を担う人材を育成するためにIT留学をやっていることや、留学先に来た人の人生を変えたいという熱い想いに惹かれ、「Seed Tech School」を選びました。
On the website, it said that Seed Tech wants to be a place where everyone involved can experience a “Life Shift” and move toward a better life. I was drawn to their passion for helping people transform their lives through IT Ryugaku and for developing the next generation of talent—that’s what made me choose Seed Tech School.
ーシードテックのミッションにも共感いただけて嬉しいです。留学生活を振り返っていかがでしたか？
ーWe’re glad to hear that Seed Tech’s mission resonated with you. Looking back, how was your experience studying in the Philippines?
結果、日本での自分のコミュニティでは出会えないような、多種多様な人たちと出会い、良い刺激を受けた、人生で最も濃密な３ヶ月間を過ごすことができました。シードテックの思想や考え方に共感した人が集まっているからこその出会いだったと思います。
Those three months became some of the most meaningful in my life. I met a diverse range of people I would have never come across in my usual circles back in Japan. I think those encounters were possible because everyone there shared Seed Tech’s mindset and values.
また、「楽しかった！」で終わってしまうような留学にはしたくないと思っていたのですが、本当に「Seed Tech School」を選んでよかったなと、今振り返ってみても思います。当時の自分が想像もしていなかったような、新たな自分と出会うことができました。
I didn’t want my experience to be something that just ended with “It was fun!” Looking back, I’m truly glad I chose Seed Tech School. I was able to discover a version of myself I never could have imagined at the time.

ー「楽しい」だけで終わりたくなかったというお話もありましたが。
ーYou mentioned that you didn’t want the experience to end with just “It was fun.”
そうですね。もちろん海外に行くので全てが新鮮で楽しいですし、その環境に身を置くだけで充実感を得られると思うのですが、それだけで終わりたくないなと。
That’s right. Going abroad is of course exciting and full of new experiences, and just being in that kind of environment can feel fulfilling. But I didn’t want it to end there.
「Seed Tech School」は英語とITをどちらも学べるというプログラムで、これだけでも珍しいのですが、英語の時間は語学の勉強だけでなく、課外活動という異文化交流の時間もプログラムに組み込まれていました。現地の英語の先生と対話するのはもちろん、現地のスラム街を訪れ子どもたちと交流するなど、異なる価値観に触れる時間も、どれも座学では体験できないものでした。自分の目を通して、フィリピンという国や文化を学ぶ貴重な体験ができましたし、生まれ育った土地以外の文化・言語にどっぷり浸かるのが留学の醍醐味だなと、経験したからこそ胸を張って言えますね。
Seed Tech School offers a rare program where you can learn both English and IT. But what made it even more special was that English lessons included not only language study, but also cultural exchange through extracurricular activities. I had the chance to interact with local teachers, visit slum areas, and spend time with children—experiences that exposed me to values I’d never encountered before, and that I could never have gained from a classroom alone. It was a valuable chance to learn about the Philippines—its people and culture—through my own eyes. And now that I’ve experienced it firsthand, I can confidently say that one of the best parts of studying abroad is immersing yourself in a culture and language different from your own.
ープログラミングの学習についてはいかがでしたか？
ーHow was your experience in learning programming?
プログラミングの授業では、アプリを開発してリリースすることを目標に、講義を受けつつ個人学習も続け、実際にiOSアプリをAppストアに公開するところまで達成しました。大変な作業ではありましたが、授業前の朝や放課後に、バッジメイト（=同期間に留学した仲間）とカフェでもくもくと作業をする時間も、とても楽しく充実していました。
In the programming course, the goal was to develop and release an app. While attending lectures, I also kept up with independent study and eventually succeeded in publishing an iOS app to the App Store. It was tough at times, but I really enjoyed the focused time I spent working with my fellow students in cafes before and after class. Those moments were both fun and fulfilling.
ーバッジメイトの方とは今でも交流はありますか？
ーDo you still keep in touch with the people you studied with?
一緒に過ごした仲間とは留学後も連絡を取り合っていて、時々ご飯に行って、お互いの近況をシェアし合いながら応援しあえる関係が続いています。今の仕事や恋愛の話もしますが、留学当時の話もかなり盛り上がりますね。こんな仲間ができたことは、私にとって大きな財産です。
I still keep in touch with the friends I studied with. We go out for meals now and then, catch up on what’s going on in our lives, and support each other. We talk about work and relationships, of course, but our memories from that time still come up often—and we always have a great time reminiscing. Having friends like that is something I truly value.
また、シードテックには「Seed Tech School」の卒業生が集まる「Seed Tech/NexSeed Reunion」という同窓会の場があるんですが、そこでバッジメイト以外の多種多様な卒業生に会えますし、卒業後にも新たな出会いがあるのが面白いなと思いますね。
Seed Tech also has an alumni community called the “Seed Tech/NexSeed Reunion,” where graduates from different cohorts can connect. It’s a great place to meet not only the people you studied with, but also a diverse mix of alumni—and I think it’s really exciting that new connections continue even after graduating.
ーIT留学を経て、ご自身で感じた変化はありましたか？
ーDid you notice any changes in yourself after completing the IT Ryugaku program?
視野が広がった感覚があります。日本と比較してインフラも整っていないですし、日本を客観視して、「当たり前じゃないんだな」と改めて日々の生活に対する感謝が深まりました。
I felt like my perspective had expanded. Compared to Japan, the infrastructure wasn’t as developed, and seeing that helped me view Japan more objectively. It made me realize how much I had taken everyday life for granted, and deepened my appreciation for it.
加えて、挑戦心も高まったと思います。英語が公用語の世界に自ら飛び込むことで、海外の人と話すハードルもかなり下がりましたし、自分に自信がつき、やりたいことがさらに増え、より行動的になりました。海外で実際に生活することで「なんとかなる」というマインドを身につけられたのも大きいのではと思います。
I also became more willing to take on challenges. By throwing myself into a world where English is the primary language, I lowered the mental barrier to talking with people from other countries. I gained more confidence, found even more things I wanted to try, and became more proactive. Living abroad also helped me develop a mindset of “I’ll figure it out somehow,” which I think has made a big difference.
ー今の仕事にも活きているなと感じる時はありますか？
ーAre there moments when you feel the experience has helped you in your current job?
実は、コミュニケーションは元々苦手だったんです。どうにか克服したいともがく中で、留学で「英語×IT」を同時に学ぶことで、コミュニケーションそのものへの苦手意識が減りましたし、現在の仕事を経てでもありますが、「コミュニケーションって開発と同じ流れだな」とふと思ったんです。その考え方は組織においても活きるなと。
I’d say communication skills. I used to struggle with communication. I really wanted to overcome it, and through learning both English and IT during the program, I gradually lost my fear of communicating. Later on, in my current job, I had a moment where I realized—communication is actually a lot like development. That way of thinking has proven useful in how I approach teamwork and organization.
ー「開発と同じ」と言いますと…？
ーWhat do you mean by “a lot like development”?
少し専門的な話になってしまうかもしれないのですが、例えば、システムを開発する時って、前提として「誰に」「どんな価値を提供するために」など、目的を持った上でゴールを設計し、機能を作ります。そしてその機能を作るための責務分解（=プログラミングにおいてコードの役割(責務)を分離すること）をして、その責務同士をどう連携させるか、通信するかというのを設計していきます。
It might sound a bit technical, but for example, when you’re developing a system, you start by defining the goal—who it’s for and what value it’s supposed to deliver. Then you build the necessary functions, break down responsibilities within the code, and design how those responsibilities will interact and communicate with one another.
コミュニケーションも同じで、お互いの前提を揃えるためには、まずはゴールをすり合わせる必要があります。「こうしたい」の理想があって、それに対する現状があって、その差分となる問題を引き起こす要因が複数あって…といった風に、構造を整理するとシンプルに考えることができます。
Communication works in a similar way. To get on the same page, you first need to align on the goal. There’s the ideal outcome, the current situation, and a number of factors causing the gap between them. When you break it down like that, it actually becomes easier to think through.
抽象度を上げて、組織でこれを考えると、異なる目的意識を持った人たちが同じチームになり、仕事をうまく進めていくにも、やはり同じ流れが必要になります。それぞれのゴールや前提が揃っていないと、物事を決める際の優先順位も各々によって変わってしまうため、意見が噛み合わず、議論が平行線になってしまいますよね。
If you zoom out and apply this to an organization, the same kind of process is needed when people with different goals come together on a team. Unless everyone is aligned on goals and assumptions, priorities will differ, conversations will miss each other, and discussions can easily go in circles.
システム開発の場合は、コードを書いて、様々な役割を持った機能が連携し合ってシステムが動くという流れになりますが、こうして分解して考えてみると、組織の場合は、コミュニケーションを通して、多様な想いを持った一人ひとりがチームとして効果的に連携し、結果的に組織が組織としてしっかり稼働するようになります。
In system development, you write code and build functions with different roles that work together to keep the system running. In the same way, when you break things down, you realize that in an organization, it’s communication that connects individuals with diverse perspectives so they can function effectively as a team—and that’s what allows the organization to operate as a whole.
プログラムを書くように対話を重ねることで、組織もまた「動く」ものになる。コミュニケーションもエンジニア思考で考えることによって、ハードルが下がったんです。
By approaching dialogue like writing a program, I realized that communication can make an organization “run” too. Thinking about communication with an engineer’s mindset made it feel much less intimidating.
ーなるほど。コミュニケーションが苦手な中、言語が違う環境に飛び込むというのもかなりハードルが高いような気もするのですが。
ーI see. It sounds like jumping into a different-language environment would’ve been quite a challenge, especially if communication wasn’t your strong suit.
今思うと、それを乗り越えたかった、というのも留学の目的の一つだったのかもしれませんね。
Now I think about it, I may have wanted to overcome that challenge—and that could be part of why I chose to study abroad.
母国語が通じない中で、自分の言葉で相手に伝えるという環境に身を置いたことで自信にも繋がり、いろいろな壁を越えて成長した実感があります。まだ得意ではないなと感じる部分もありますが、IT留学のおかげで苦手意識は減りましたね。
Being in an environment where I couldn’t rely on my native language and had to express myself in my own words gave me a real sense of confidence. I felt myself grow as I worked through various challenges. I still don’t feel like I’ve fully mastered it, but thanks to the IT Ryugaku program, I no longer see communication as something to be afraid of.
また、他にも成長した点で言うと、課題に対峙した時に、不安だからやらない・挑戦しないのではなく、やってみて確かめようというスタンスになりました。進んで仕事に取り組んだ結果、元々はエンジニアとして会社にジョインしましたが、今では人事採用の領域にまで仕事の幅を広げることができています。不安だからやらない、ではなく、とりあえずやってみて確かめよう、という考えが自然と自分の中で醸成され、進んで仕事に取り組んだ結果、いろいろな範囲を任せてもらえるようになったんだなと、振り返ってみて思います。
Another way I’ve grown is in how I face challenges. Instead of avoiding something because I feel unsure, I’ve developed a mindset of trying things out and seeing what happens. Because I took initiative at work, I originally joined the company as an engineer, but now I’ve expanded into the HR and hiring space as well. Looking back, I realize that this “try it first” mindset helped me take on more responsibility and grow into new roles.
ーエンジニアから人事採用の領域にまで、幅を広げられているのはすごいですね！
ーThat’s impressive—you’ve expanded your role from engineering into HR and recruitment!
IT留学でアプリ開発、リリースまでを経験したことによって、サービス開発のプロセスのイメージをつけることができるようになりました。リリースするまでにやるべきことが分かり、エンジニアリングに関する業務に対して、ハードルなく取り組むことができたんです。
Through the experience of developing and releasing an app during the IT Ryugaku program, I was able to get a clear picture of the service development process. I understood what needed to be done to reach release, so I could approach engineering tasks without hesitation.
そんな中で、システムの設計だけではなく、組織の設計にも興味が湧いてきて、組織の行動を分析する社内プロジェクトにジョインしたりする中で、徐々に人事領域の仕事にまで染み出しており、育成や採用にも関わるようになっていました。とりあえずやってみよう、のスタンスで仕事に取り組んだ成果と言えるかと思います。
Along the way, I started to take an interest not just in system design, but in how organizations are designed too. I joined an internal project to analyze organizational behavior, and that gradually led me into HR-related work like hiring and talent development. I think it all came from my mindset of “just try it and see,” and the willingness to take on new challenges.
ー今後の目標についても教えてください。
ーCould you share your goals for the future?
組織開発・人材育成をメインに、現在は採用活動にも携わっています。一人ひとりがイキイキと仕事に熱中できる状態、そしてそれが組織としての最高の成果に繋がるような環境構築を目指し、仕事に取り組んでいます。
My main focus is on organizational development and talent growth, and I’m also involved in recruitment activities. I’m working to build an environment where each person can be fully engaged in their work—and where that energy leads to the best possible outcomes for the organization.
人事に関わり始めたのはここ1年くらいではあるので、まずはしっかりと現状をキャッチアップし、円滑に取り組める状態を目指しつつ、ゆくゆくは理想の組織に向けたアップデートをどんどんやっていけたらと思っています。具体的には、まだ見ぬ、次の「アタリマエ」の組織像を描き、その理想的な組織の実現に向けた人材の育成や文化の醸成など、あらゆる角度・視点から試行錯誤を続けていきたいなと考えています。
Since I’ve only been involved in HR for about a year, my first goal is to catch up and work smoothly in the role. Looking ahead, I hope to actively help shape and update what an ideal organization looks like. Specifically, I want to imagine a new kind of “normal” for organizations—one that hasn’t been seen yet—and explore how to build the culture and develop the people needed to bring that vision to life from every possible angle.
人や組織、社会がどこに向かうのか？どう成長していくのか？を探求したり、その普遍的な仕組みや原理原則を探求することが個人的な欲求としてもあるので、その知的好奇心を満たし続けていきたいですね。
I’m personally driven by a desire to explore where people, organizations, and society are headed, and how they grow. I want to keep feeding that intellectual curiosity by digging into the underlying structures and principles that shape how we evolve.
ー最後に、留学を迷っている方へのメッセージをお願いします！
ーFinally, do you have a message for those who are interested but unsure about studying abroad?
なぜ留学を迷っているのか、今しかできない濃密な経験とは何なのか、をちゃんと深掘りして考えて欲しいですね。それを考えた上で、自分が何を望んでいるのかを自分自身に問いかけて、心がワクワクする選択をしてほしいなと。そのワクワクを止めているのが「経験したことがない」という不安からきているのなら、乗り越えてチャレンジしてほしいです。
I’d encourage them to really take the time to reflect—why are they unsure about studying abroad? What does a meaningful, once-in-a-lifetime experience look like for them? I hope they’ll ask themselves what they truly want, and make the choice that excites them. If what’s holding them back is the fear of the unknown, I hope they’ll find the courage to step forward and take the leap.
留学を振り返ってみて、自分は本当に行ってよかったと感じています。一度しかない人生なので、後悔のない選択をしてほしいなと思いますね。
Looking back, I’m truly glad I decided to study abroad. You only get one life—I hope they make a choice they won’t regret.
